How to fix Apple Health Workouts not syncing to Strava

Recently I’ve been using a mix of Strava and Apple’s Health/Fitness apps to log cycling, walking and other activities.

However I was frequently disappointed that I couldn’t sync a workout from one to the other. Until I found out it should be possible and this article on the Strava support site told me how, in theory.

Although whenever I went that area of the app my list was empty, I tried running through the connect to Health options in that area of the app, to no avail. Each time expecting to see the “Strava would like access to…” dialog that gets shown on install.

Then after looking in the Apple Health app I stumbled upon the follow and it worked!

Head to the Sharing tab in the Apple Health App, then the Apps option, here you should see Strava. In here is a granular view of what you have given Strava to write data to or read data from.

For me because the app had been installed for a long time I think I had given permissions before it needed certain ones. So at the bottom in the read section, the Workout Routes and Workouts were switched off. (Also the write workout routes was off, which might explain why when a workout recorded in Strava appear in Apple’s fitness app it never had the map, [EDIT sadly not, see below])
